Qatar’s ‘Doha International Institute for Family Studies and Development’ Co-Sponsored Symposium in Valletta, Malta

Symposium on the Jurisprudence of the Family: “Parenting and the Influence of Culture”  held on July 15th–16th at Valetta Campus, University of Malta

The Doha International Institute for Family Studies and Development (DIIFSD), co-sponsored a symposium on the nature and importance of the family, held at the Aula Magna in the Old University building of the University of Malta.

Titled “Parenting and the Influence of Culture”, the event focused on philosophical, conceptual and theoretical principles of the family unit.

Taking place over two days, the symposium has been created to provide a forum to explore the jurisprudential principles that underlie parenting, parent-child relations, and the legal recognition and regulation of those relationships.

With particular reference to cultural and traditional influences and expectations, the goal of this meeting was to consider the core-principles of family law, and to enable a positive exchange on some of the current issues affecting parenting in light of those jurisprudential principles.

The DIIFSDwas represented by Dr. Richard Wilkins, Executive Director and Nada Frangieh, Family Research Director. Co-conveners were Dr. Lynn Wardle from Brigham Young University (USA), Dr. Scott FitzGibbon, from the Boston College of Law (USA) and Professor Ruth Farrugia of the University of Malta.

Mrs. Frangieh delivered the opening remarks and outlined DIIFSD’s mission, vision and current activities whilst Dr. Wilkins presented a paper concerning the ‘Global Implications of Emerging Family Structures’.

Malta’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Gonzi addressed the delegation at the conclusion of Day One.

Speaking about the Malta event, Dr. Wilkins said: “The topics scheduled for discussion are important for all societies. We are honoured to have the outstanding support of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, Qatar Foundation’s chairperson whose vision has both enabled and empowered the DIIFSD to participate in this symposium.”

“Our institute develops an international and intercultural network of scholars supporting the family as the fundamental group unit of society, entitled to protection. Being part of such a varied, high-calibre group of speakers reflects extremely well on the work we are involved in”, he added.

Numerous experts from many different countries and backgrounds spoke at the symposium. Their papers will be published in the International Journal of Jurisprudence of the Family (“IJJF”), a new law journal published by Wm.S. Hein & Co.

Other sponsors include the International Academy for Study of the Jurisprudence of the Family, the Marriage & Family Law Research Project at the Brigham Young University Law School, Utah and The University of Malta.

DAY OF GENERAL DISCUSSION 2011: Children of Incarcerated Parents

  September/30/2011

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child 2011 Day of General Discussion (DGD) is under way in Geneva.  More than 200 participants are attending the DGD, making it the biggest to date. This year’s discussion is dedicated to the theme of ‘Children of Incarcerated Parents’.

‘Unplugged’: One Mom’s Experiment

September30, 2011

Recently we had the most amazing — and most difficult — weekend, ever. The reason? I put my kids on a “fast” from electronics. I felt like their behavior, attitudes and general spirits were completely out of control and they were becoming so addicted I didn’t know what to do. I don’t think I’m alone in observing this about my family.

Fighting poverty means encouraging marriage

September 29, 2011

US Census data on poverty was released a few days ago. The prestigious Brookings Institute in Washington held a press conference to analyse the data, and Ron Haskins, a Senior Fellow of the Institute, drew attention to something that is equally relevant to Ireland, namely the link between poverty and female-headed households.

Married people less likely to commit crime says new study

October 1, 2011

People who marry are significantly less likely to engage in crime, because marriage enables them to develop greater self-control, according to a new study.

The research examined changes in marital status and self-control between late adolescence and early adulthood. One factor it looked at in measuring levels of self-control was marijuana use. It found that young marijuana-users who went on to marry were less likely to have continued using the drug than those who remained single.

Primary schools being forced to teach “permissive” sex education

 September 29 2011

Primary schools in the UK are being forced by some local authorities to teach sex education, leading family charity, the Family Education Trust, has claimed in a new report.
Education bodies in parts of the country are using an awards scheme called Healthy Schools introduced by Tony Blair, designed to promote healthy behaviour in schools, to impose “liberal and permissive” teaching on pupils, they warn.

How do I stop my son being jealous of his newborn sister?

October 2, 2011

I’m just about to have my second baby. My son is three and a half and I’m worried that he’s going to be very jealous of the time I have to devote to the newborn and that it will harm our incredibly close relationship. How can I make sure he feels he’s still special?

How the other half lives: Bryony Gordon

October 2, 2011

Chloe is still giving me the silent treatment, and my mother is still living with me. It really is like being a teenager all over again, but without the youthful looks or the size-eight figure. Still, I cheer myself up with the thought of a trip to New York – a working holiday, or, as I like to call it, a ‘woliday’.

Margaret Ogola: an African heroine

One of four distinguished Kenyan women who died recently was a doctor who spent herself on the welfare of AIDS victims and strengthening the African family.

Parents, Tell Your Kids About Abortion; The Baby is Broken

september .29.2011

Last year, I took my whole family to the March for Life in Washington, D.C., including my 4 year old daughter, Grace. She frequently goes out to the abortion clinics with me to pray. She knows what it means to be pregnant. She has a very simplified understanding of abortion.

Children’s Well-being in UK, Sweden and Spain: The Role of Inequality and Materialism

September 22, 2011

New research by Ipsos MORI for UNICEF UK has shown that children in the UK feel trapped in a "materialistic culture" and do not spend enough time with their families.

Change happens: new evidence on sexual orientation

A chorus of voices in the professional world today proclaims that it is impossible to change sexual orientation, particularly homosexual orientation, and that the attempt to change sexual orientation is commonly and inherently harmful. For example, for many years the Public Affairs website of the American Psychological Association stated: “Can therapy change sexual orientation? No. . . [H]omosexuality . . . does not require treatment and is not changeable.”[1]
